It gave the impression that there was actually a decent vision behind it, but the execution is quite weak—that much is obvious. If the most important thing in games is having fun, there are too many design choices that undermine this. The visuals, including the designs and backgrounds, aren't bad on their own, but even simple things like objects blocking the view of the map often make you question why they're there.
The same applies to the traps placed throughout the game—rather than adding difficulty or conveying a sense of danger, they often just feel frustrating.
