The Last Remnant is a bit of a weird one from Square Enix. At first, it looks like a pretty standard JRPG, but the more you play it, the more you realize it’s actually trying to do something a little different.
The most interesting part is definitely the combat system. Instead of controlling characters one by one, you command small squads, and battles sometimes turn into this controlled chaos. At first, it’s a bit confusing, and you might feel like you don’t fully understand what’s going on, but once the system starts clicking, the flow of battles becomes really satisfying.
There are some cool ideas on the story side, too. The world revolves around these ancient artifacts called Remnants, and the entire political balance of the world is built around them. Kingdoms, power struggles, lost civilizations, there’s a pretty interesting backdrop there. That said, the storytelling doesn’t always fully live up to the potential of those ideas.
Overall, the game feels a bit rough around the edges. Some systems are more complicated than they need to be, and the balance can be a little strange at times. But despite all that, it has its own kind of charm.
It’s not a groundbreaking JRPG, but you can tell it’s trying to do something different. I still had a good time with it.
