In my opinion, Black Myth: Wukong is the best Souls-like ever made, although I wouldn’t strictly define it as a Souls-like. It’s more of an action RPG, but regardless of the genre, it’s an incredible game.
Considering that Game Science was a relatively new studio and this was their first major game, what they managed to create is genuinely impressive. You can notice some of the limitations that come with being a first-time developer, especially in certain aspects where the game feels less polished. For example, there are quite a lot of invisible walls and some small details that could have been handled better. These are understandable flaws, especially considering the studio’s background and the fact that the Chinese game industry is still relatively young compared to some of the more established gaming markets.
However, they more than make up for these shortcomings in other areas. The gameplay is fantastic, the story is beautiful, and what I appreciated the most is how different and unpredictable the setting feels. It introduces you to a culture and mythology that may be completely unfamiliar to many Western players, making the experience feel genuinely fresh and unique.
I absolutely loved it, and I can’t wait to see what Game Science does with the next Black Myth chapter.
