DOOM is an incredible return to the roots of the FPS genre, and it’s easy to see why the series became so influential in the first place. The gameplay is fast, brutal and extremely satisfying, with an amazing arsenal and some of the most enjoyable gunplay I’ve experienced.
The Doom Slayer is also an incredibly iconic protagonist, and the combination of his lore, the heavy soundtrack and the overall atmosphere makes the game feel absolutely badass. I also really appreciate how little the game relies on its story. It focuses almost entirely on gameplay, while still giving you enough lore and context to understand what is happening.
My main criticism is that the gameplay can become somewhat repetitive over longer sessions, as the core mechanics don’t always offer enough variety to keep things completely fresh.
Despite that, DOOM is still an excellent game and a fantastic modern take on a genre that it helped create. Fast, violent, stylish and incredibly fun to play.
