- Open reviewI’ve generally enjoyed Edmund McMillen’s games, and his visual style has become iconic at this point. Because of that, even before playing, I had this feeling of “this game won’t disappoint me.” And it didn’t. The game quickly made a name for itself thanks to its unusual ideas, bold design choices, and how well it utilizes a popular genre, but beyond just being “fun,” it’s also genuinely impressive from a design standpoint. It feels packed with content and variety, while also making full use of the gameplay systems the genre offers. What really stands out is how well it builds its core gameplay loop. It’s not just interesting, it’s genuinely engaging and easy to get hooked on. As for the negatives, and this might partly be on me, it does have a sense of humor that feels a bit outdated.
